Owen on software

40,000 hours later

This year marks my 20th in software; I know, I’m getting old! That’s around 40,000 hours, give or take. To celebrate, I thought I’d break out the soapbox and reflect on the state of the industry in a series of posts titled ‘We’ve got it all wrong’.

Could do better

I guess the title is a bit of a give-away. I’m going to be talking about some stuff I think we could and should improve. That said, I feel incredibly fortunate to have come into the industry just as mobile telecoms and the internet took off. The progression in technology and computer power in the last two decades has been staggering.

Cool geeks

Software has come of age; it’s now cool to say you code. Who’d have thunk it?

Creating software today is so much easier than it was when I started, and yet we still see too many projects fail, we struggle to find good tech folk and don’t even get me started on development processes.

So, next week I’m going to give my ten pence worth on why I think we still see epic project failures.
